The leading Indian production house Maddock Films has released the first look of its much-awaited historical epic Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal as the legendary Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film marks Maddock Films’ foray into the historical epic genre and has already created much buzz for its depiction of one of India’s most revered historical figures.
Laxman Utekar is behind the camera in Chhaava, which tells a gripping story about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of the legendary Shivaji Maharaj. The intense and powerful portrayal of the Maratha king by Vicky Kaushal promises to do justice to the legacy of Sambhaji. The talented Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna have also been signed to star alongside Kaushal in the film. The first look for the film released on the death anniversary of Sambhaji Maharaj itself, which brought a historical factor to the movie.
Sambhaji Maharaj became king in 1681 and remained the ruler of the Maratha Empire during such a challenging era. He has been known and remembered for the military genius, strategies, and determined leadership in terms of constant battles, especially that with the Mughal Empire. Though brief, his reign had several battles and strategic victories which place him within Indian history. His fearlessness in protecting the Maratha kingdom when facing unequal forces had gained him the epithet of Chhaava or the “cub lion”. His story will go on in his lifetime testament of fearlessness and never backtracking on behalf of his people.
According to Dinesh Vijan, founder of Maddock Films and the producer of Chhaava, he is proud to bring the story of Sambhaji Maharaj on the big screen. “I am immensely proud to tell the story of India’s Chhaava through a film that honors the indomitable legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj,” he said. “He was a true warrior and visionary leader whose story is long overdue for the big screen.”. Through this film, we intend to glorify the immense legacy of this legendary figure.
Maddock Films has been successful in its diversity of films delivered, and Chhaava would be another mile stone in this growing reputation for the company. Indeed, the production house saw a blockbuster 2024 with hits such as the sci-fi rom-com Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, the horror-comedy Munjya, and the much-awaited sequel, Stree 2, to the 2018 horror-comedy hit Stree. In what can best be described as a successful streak, Maddock Films has recently announced a slate of eight interconnected films in the horror-comedy genre to release over four years.
The theatrical release is set for Chhaava on 14 February, 2025. Already people are eagerly anticipating the cinematic wonder to be given on screen visually as well as emotionally.
